EcoDrive HONG KONG partners with Optical 88 and eye care professionals to launch “Start Small, Start Now” eye care products recycling program.

Optical 88 estimates that the annual usage of disposable contact lenses in Hong Kong exceeds 63,000,000! Those single-use plastic items may be small in size, but they accumulate to join the 2,100 tonnes of plastic that Hong Kong throws into landfills every year as almost NONE of the eye drop bottles, vials or disposable contact lens blister packs are being recycled.

At EcoDrive Hong Kong, we believe that a small action performed by millions of people daily can make a huge impact on the Earth. To tackle the problem, we have partnered with Optical 88, eye care professionals and offices, to launch the “START SMALL, START NOW” eye care product recycling program with the aim to provide a channel for the non PET plastic to be collected and properly recycled. 

While we advocate to reduce single-use plastic consumption, items such as single-use contact lens trays and medicinal eye drop vials are difficult to avoid at times. Through this program, we can ensure that these millions of small items can be properly recycled. 

Eye care professionals help people see better everyday and are with this recycling program, they are helping to make this Earth a better place for people to see. The Grantham Hospital, the first public hospital to participate in the recycle program, estimates that more than 600,000 small plastic eye drop bottles and vials used by their clinic and patients are being thrown out annually.   

Participating organizations will display the “Start Small, Start Now” collection boxes at their premises. Patients, staff and the public will then collect and drop off their plastic contact lens packaging, eye drop bottles, vials at the locations for recycling. The plastic will be picked up by our partnering recycler periodically, processed into pellets, and eventually made into products such as industrial pipes.
